What each type is
- Universities
- A université groups several faculties on one campus and awards licence, master and doctorate degrees across many fields. It is the most common type and the one most bacheliers are assigned to.
- Specialised schools and institutes
- An école supérieure, grande école or national institute is specialised: it trains for one profession or field, such as engineering, management, agronomy or the arts, rather than offering a broad range of faculties.
- Écoles normales supérieures
- An école normale supérieure (ENS) trains the teachers of the school system, from primary through secondary.
- University centres
- A centre universitaire is a smaller institution, often the first higher-education establishment in its wilaya. Several have since grown into full universities.
Orientation season
After the baccalauréat results, bacheliers rank the courses they want and are then assigned to an institution. This map is the other half of that choice: where each institution actually is, in which commune, and which website to read before committing to a wilaya you may not know.

What this map is not
Not every marker is a campus gate. 67 institutions sit on their real campus and are drawn as pins; the other 110 sit on their commune or wilaya centre and are drawn as dots, so a dot marks the town, not the entrance. The map covers institutions, not the faculties, annexes or university residences attached to them. The data comes from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, republished as open data in the @geoalgeria/enseignement-superieur package and last updated Aug 3, 2026.
