The school cycles
- Primaire
- Five years of primary school from around age six at the école primaire, the most common school in the country, ending with the end-of-primary assessment that opens the CEM.
- Moyen (CEM)
- Four years at the collège d'enseignement moyen (CEM), ending with the BEM, the exam that opens the lycée.
- Secondaire (lycée)
- Three years at the lycée, ending with the baccalauréat, the exam that decides university orientation.
- Préscolaire
- Kindergartens and preparatory classes for children before primary school. OpenStreetMap maps them as their own category, so they carry their own colour on the map.
- Unclassified and special-purpose
- Schools whose name and tags give no usable cycle, plus special-purpose schools such as Quranic, language and vocational schools. As contributors name more schools on OpenStreetMap, records leave this bucket for their real cycle.

How complete is this map?
This is a community map, not an official registry: 11,855 of the 29,702 educational institutions the Ministry of National Education reports are mapped, about 40%, and 3,220 of them carry no name yet. Coverage is uneven between wilayas. If a school you know is missing, adding it on openstreetmap.org adds it here at the next refresh; this extract dates from Aug 6, 2026.
Common questions
- How many schools are there in Algeria?
- The Ministry of National Education reports 29,702 educational institutions nationwide. This map shows the 11,855 that OpenStreetMap contributors have mapped so far, about 40%, classified by cycle: 4,019 primaires, 2,378 CEM, 1,576 lycées and 268 préscolaires.
- Why is my school not on the map?
- The map is built from OpenStreetMap, a community project: a school appears once someone has mapped it, so coverage is uneven between wilayas. Anyone can add a missing school on openstreetmap.org, and it will appear here with the next data refresh.
- How are schools classified by cycle?
- From each school's own name and tags in OpenStreetMap: a CEM or collège classifies as moyen, a lycée as secondaire, a kindergarten as préscolaire, and by Algerian convention a plain école with no cycle word is a primaire. 3,614 schools with no usable signal stay unclassified rather than guessed.
- Are kindergartens on the map?
- Yes. 268 kindergartens and preparatory schools are mapped, each with the préscolaire colour of the legend.
- How do I find the schools in my wilaya?
- Use Find nearest on the map to rank schools by distance from your position, or open your wilaya's page if it is in the list of the busiest wilayas below.
